Our Story
Let's learn more about Northern Jumbies through the founder's lens.
"It all began with a dream, a mentorship, and a vision for cultural preservation", says Pixel Heller, a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist and founder of Northern Jumbies. After being accepted into a mentorship program with VIBE Arts, Pixel reflects on the decision that changed the course of her life, inspired by a close collaborator of hers, Simone Harris, founder of Walking Tall Jamaica. "I specifically requested to be mentored by Junior Bisnath, a Moko Jumbie master with over 30 years of experience." This decision gave Pixel the appropriate skills and information required to build the budding business.
An alumnus recipient of honours and distinction from OCAD University, Pixel Heller brings her undivided and utmost dedication to everything she believes in. Her path when beginning this journey was never clear, until she found traditional masquerade and Moko Jumbie. It brought meaning and unity to Pixel's soul as a Caribbean descendent.
It was clear to Pixel what she needed to accomplish in Canada. She wanted to see her home filled with the cultural strength of her motherland. With the appropriate training passed along to her by Junior Bisnath, she worked hard to build her inventory of unique stilts, masterfully crafted by using decades-long tradition fused with modern innovations and a touch of Pixel's unique identity.
Today, Northern Jumbies stands as a bridge between generations and geographies. It is a testament to the power of mentorship, community, and the importance of keeping cultural traditions alive.
